February 7th, 2016, during Superbowl L, a disturbing commercial was aired. As Examiner put it in an article, it was the “stuff of viral nightmares.” Mountain Dew The but is the nonsensical advertisement anything more than odd? The ad features a cgi character with the head of a puppy, the torso of a monkey, and human baby legs. The creature busts through the wall, dancing around a bleak-looking living room where three tired men sit watching tv and discussing how they are too tired to go out. The creature dances around the room with a pail filled with “Mountain Dew Kickstart” which is similarly described as a combination of Mountain Dew, juice, and caffeine. This advertisement, as unorthodox and it may be, has quite clearly made an impression on the internet and television-consuming population. This was the best-received commercial of the Super Bowl night and received 2.2 million online views and 300,000 social media “interactions” after airing according to Cleveland.com.

This add feeds on the needs for escape, affiliation, and satisfy curiosity. Boring backgrounds in contrast with the asinine character demonstrate the need for escape from the boring, Mountain Dew free, regular world. It also feeds the need for affiliation, showing how a group of friends, together, is key to having a good time. It also emphasizes the need to satisfy curiosity, a need that can only ever be satisfied by drinking the weird trio drink and ascending to the point of comprehending the weird trio puppy-monkey baby. Repetition and diversion are the main focuses of the advertisement, repeating the same peculiar name, “Puppymonkeybaby” and diverting attention away from the quality of the product to the character. This diversion is why most people know the ad, not the product, leading them to look it up again and watch it again.

  1. I completely agree, this ad makes me extremely curious about what this ad is and it draws in my attention based on shock just long enough to show the product.
